Q & A: Skipping for Weight Loss

Q: I am overweight, someone advised me to skip so that I can lose weight quickly but when I skip my knees hurt. What do you advice?

A: First of all, you are doing the right thing by listening to your body. Skipping is indeed a great exercise but it may not be for everyone. But more importantly, have you had a check-up for your knees? Please consult with your doctor before beginning an exercise program. Also remember that as our bodies’ age, bone density tends to decrease. However, this can be reversed by incorporating strength training to your workout program. I must say that I personally do not believe in losing weight quickly.  A healthy weight loss goal is to lose 1-2 pounds a week. Therefore, when it comes to choosing an effective weight loss program, slow and steady always wins the race. Exercising should be a part of your lifestyle and not simply a quick-fix solution. Are you ready to make it a lifestyle? You have to ask yourself that question. In regard to exercises for problem knees, walking on a treadmill, swimming, indoor cycling and the elliptical machine are some great choices as they are low impact. Do however continue listening to your body.
