Tip #8: Say NO to fad diets

There are so many fad diets out there, I am sure you have heard them all, perhaps even tried some. The key question is, have they worked?  I will admit that in the past carbs (carbohydrates) were my enemy, not realizing that carbohydrates are essential for proper body functioning. As a matter of fact, “to keep healthy and energetic, 45-65% of your daily calories should come from carbohydrate containing foods” (Beck, 2002). I have therefore learned that to stay healthy, I have to incorporate foods from all groups (protein, good fat, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and water). Hence, my advice to you is to be weary of diets that completely eliminate these essential food types.

A few examples of each:

Carbohydrates: 100% Whole grain bread, brown rice and oatmeal.

Protein: extra lean ground beef, eggs and soy.

Fat: salmon, avocado and almonds.

Vitamins & Minerals: fruits and vegetables.
